Gulf Restoration Network

Outreach Interns work in their local Gulf communities to protect and restore the natural resources of the Gulf of Mexico. Positions are available throughout the Gulf region.

The Gulf is an amazing natural resource that is dying the death of a thousand cuts. In every Gulf community, there are specific environmental issues that must be addressed, and they often fit into larger regional efforts. Using similar organizing skills and activities throughout the Gulf region, Outreach Interns will work on the GRN campaign most relevant in their location.

Outreach Intern typical duties include

Grassroots Outreach

• Setting up and staffing GRN outreach tables at local events
• Gathering petition signatures and distributing information to local citizens
• Conducting short presentations to classes, organizations, and other groups
• Phonebanking GRN members and potential activists

Direct Action and Pressure Tactics

• Participating in coordinated Days of Action, such as call-in days
• Organizing demonstrations to pressure local targets (corporate outlets, legislators offices, etc. Varies according to campaign)
• Generating emails to campaign targets and delivering petition signatures and letters

GRN Network and Coalition Building

• Meeting with community leaders to garner support for GRN campaigns
• Recruiting GRN Member Groups
• Setting up presentations to local organizations for GRN staff

Media

• Writing letters-to-the-editor
• Conducting outreach and meeting with local reporters and editorial boards
• Organizing press conferences

Internships require a 10-hour per week commitment.  Positions are unpaid.  Academic credit is available.
