SUMMARY:Webinar: The Deep Gulf
DESCRIPTION:Ou webinar explores life in the deep\, dark Gulf: what’s down there\, why they matter\, and how are they doing? \nWhen: Monday April 13  6:30 pm CT / 7:30 pm ET \nWhere: Online Registration through Zoom here. \nJoin us for a journey into the deep blue waters of the Gulf with Dr. Tracey Sutton\, professor of marine and environmental sciences at the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center of Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Sutton will discuss the extraordinary biodiversity of the deep Gulf water column\, from the sunlit surface to the pitch-black “midnight zone.” Research over the last 15 years has uncovered numerous new life forms but has also detected a decrease in pelagic life across multiple levels\, from small deep-sea “baitfish” to large oceanic predators. \nDr. Tracey Sutton will discuss the health of the deep Gulf in the context of a highly interconnected ecosystem that ranges from Florida to Texas. Fishermen who seek pelagic fish like tuna and billfish in the Gulf will be particularly interested in Dr. Sutton’s work\, which connects with the health of populations of offshore recreational fish. \nQuestions: Contact Christian Wagley at christian@healthygulf.org \nMidnight Zone\, Credit: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution\nMore about Dr. Sutton: \nDr. Tracey Sutton specializes in the ecology and drivers of deep-pelagic ecosystems worldwide. He is Professor at the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center\, Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences\, Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Sutton is currently the Director and Lead Investigator of DEEPEND (www.deependconsortium.org)\, a 120 + member research consortium formed in 2015. Prior to that\, Dr. Sutton led the Pelagic Nekton working group of the Census of Marine Life program MAR-ECO. \n He is also an invited Expert Panelist on two United Nations World Ocean Assessments\, a founding member of the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative\, and a society-elected member of the Board of Governors of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. He earned a Ph.D. at the University of South Florida and was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He has currently funded projects in the Gulf of Mexico\, the Gulf of Alaska\, the western South Atlantic\, and equatorial eastern Atlantic.

SUMMARY:Air Products Comment Period Closes
DESCRIPTION:Air Products and Chemicals\, Inc. is proposing an  ammonia and hydrogen facility in Sorrento\, Ascension Parish\, LA\, which requires  the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) permit. The project centers on producing ammonia and hydrogen while claiming to capture the carbon dioxide (CO₂). In addition to emitting over 600 tons per year of pollution like ammonia\, carbon monoxide\, and particulate matter\, Air Products is requesting permission to vent over 2 million tons CO₂ into the atmosphere every year\, with the unproven goal of removing a high percentage of CO₂\, despite stating that “it may not be technically achievable or feasible in the early operational phase of the project.” \nAccording to EPA data\, Ascension Parish already is one of the most polluted parishes in the Country\, and now Air Products wants to build a pollution emitting facility 100 feet from Sorrento Primary School. Air Products is attempting to say that this new facility will be “clean\,” but the permit they are seeking shows that it is anything but that. Residents of Ascension Parish and Louisiana deserve better.

SUMMARY:Endangered Species Day of Action - Pensacola\, FL
DESCRIPTION:Healthy Gulf is working with national partners and allies along the Gulf coast to organize a series of rallies to support endangered species in the Gulf. This comes after the federal Endangered Species Committee granted Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s request to exempt oil and gas drilling in the Gulf from having to protect endangered Gulf wildlife.\n\nThis unprecedented and deeply unpopular decision puts over 20 species of Gulf wildlife at immediate risk of harm and even extinction. That’s five species of sea turtle\, corals\, sawfish\, Gulf sturgeon and many others. The Rice’s whale could face imminent extinction from this action\, as fewer than 100 whales remain and the government’s own reports label offshore drilling as a major threat to the whales that could cause their extinction without immediate protection actions.\n\nRallies are planned on May 16 along the Gulf from the FL Keys to Texas. Events will include speakers\, live music\, education\, art activities and more.

SUMMARY:Black Birders Week Event at Cattail Marsh\, TX
DESCRIPTION:Join Healthy Gulf to learn how to identify birds by sound and experience the restorative effects of tuning into the natural soundscapes of the Golden Triangle. Then channel that connection into action and learn to write substantive public comments to make your voice heard on environmental justice issues affecting your community. \nWhere: Cattail Marsh\, 4233 Babe Zaharias Dr\, Beaumont\, TX 77705 \nWhen: Saturday\, May 23 at 11am – 1pm \nHosted by: Kourtney Revels\, Southeast Texas Coastal Organizer and Alicia Thomas\, Staff Scientist \n\nThe Gulf Coast region spanning Southeast Texas and Southern Louisiana contains some of the most productive habitat for bird diversity on the continent. The Golden Triangle of Southeast Texas sits at the convergence of the Mississippi and Central Flyways\, while Southern Louisiana anchors the Lower Mississippi Delta of the Mississippi Flyway. The coastal wetlands\, bottomland hardwoods\, pine forests\, and Gulf shores of this shared landscape support over 490 recorded species\, including in Louisiana approximately 40% of all migrating shorebird species like the Laridae family\, the 2026 Black Birders Week bird of the year. This landscape is an irreplaceable hub for birds and the communities that call it home. Its layered histories have supported a deep blending of cultures over millennia\, contributing to the unique heritage of both South Louisiana and Southeast Texas. Yet\, Black communities who created and still sustain many of the cultural elements for which this region is renowned are disproportionately impacted by environmental pollution and climate threats that endanger public health\, cultural preservation\, economic mobility\, and biodiversity. This year’s Black Birders Week theme\, “Flyways and Freedom: Advocacy\, Action\, and Future\,” invites us to envision a climate movement built by those most affected and grounded in the right of every living community to freely move\, belong\, and thrive. We invite everyone to join us for a series of events led by local Black scientists\, organizers\, and artists exploring birding as a gateway to a just\, thriving\, and healthy Gulf through arts and cultural heritage\, outdoor recreation\, and civic participation in environmental policy and decision-making.\n\n\nPhoto credit: NPS

SUMMARY:Dusk Chorus - Black Birders Week NOLA
DESCRIPTION:Where: 3113 Royal St\, New Orleans\, LA 70117 \nWhen: 6:00 – 9:00 pm\, Monday\, May 26th \nOur bayous\, marshes\, and bottomland forests are filled with the songs and calls of millions of birds traveling the Mississippi Flyway\, and the richness of these vocalizations reflects the biodiversity our habitats hold. This symphony is often best heard when day turns to night\, during the dusk chorus. \nThese same landscapes carry another living heritage: the roots of American music created over generations by Louisiana’s Black communities\, including banjo traditions\, early blues\, and the deep lineage of genres descended from them. \nThese layered natural and cultural sounds shape the unique soundscapes found throughout South Louisiana. Tuning into a landscape can tell us about ecosystem health and community resilience\, provide healing benefits for our well-being\, and serve as a living collective memory of the sounds that define our sense of place. \nJoin us for Dusk Chorus\, an evening of stories and songs led by local Black scientists\, organizers\, and artists celebrating the unique natural and cultural elements that shape South Louisiana’s soundscapes\, understanding what Louisiana communities lose when bird populations and habitat decline\, and exploring how listening to the land can be a pathway to climate justice and resilience.
