Who’s up for movie night?

With the Presidential race in its final heat, GRN is looking to mobilize our best activists to help keep the stories of the Gulf alive and elevate them to the national discussion. We need your help to inform and inspire your friends, family, and community to take action to protect and restore the Gulf.Despite the recent victory for the Gulf with the passage of the RESTORE Act to direct BP’s fines to Gulf restoration, Hurricane Isaac’s aftermath proved that BP’s oil is still in the Gulf, and our coastal communities still need action to rebuild the coastal lines of defense that once kept them safe from storms. You can help protect the Gulf of Mexico by hosting a Defend the Gulf Home Movie Screening! Hosting is easy, and we’ll provide the materials and support you need to be successful. You’ll work to set up a venue (your living room, for instance) and invite friends and family.A screening in your home, church, or community center is a powerful way to educate your friends, family and neighbors and inspire them to take action for the Gulf. The film is made up of a series of powerful, funny, and moving shorts like Vanishing Pearls: The Oystermen of Pointe a la Hache, spoofs from Second City, and GRN’s own PSA featuring Dr. John, Ani Difranco, and more. You can check out some of the videos on the sign-up page.Hosting is a fun way to take action “off line” and we have some great incentives this year.Songs by Kermit Ruffins, Irvin Mayfield, and many others on the Basin Street Records sampler CD will set a festive mood, and a sample of New Orleans’ own Community Coffee will fuel the fun.You and your guests can help show support for a healthy Gulf by our raffle to win a trip to New Orleans including a stay at the Intercontinental and gift certificates to Lilette and Gautreau’s! Folks with the most tickets sold will get a GRN Klean Kanteen water bottle, and the winner will receive a signed copy of Susan Spicer’s cookbook Crescent City Cooking. We are aiming to have the home screenings take place in the first week of October, but really it’s up to you when to do it. Your event will be instrumental in making sure that the nation learns the lessons of the BP disaster. To register to host a screening, please visit our registration page. I will send you a host package in the mail next month. The more guests there are at each event, the more fun there is to be had and more support shown for the Gulf!If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to be in touch.
