Public Comment Period is Open on Air Products’ Air Operating Permit

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. is proposing an  ammonia and hydrogen facility in Sorrento, Ascension Parish, LA, which requires  the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) permit. The project centers on producing ammonia and hydrogen while claiming to capture the carbon dioxide (CO₂). In addition to emitting over 600 tons per year of pollution like ammonia, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter, Air Products is requesting permission to vent over 2 million tons CO₂ into the atmosphere every year, with the unproven goal of removing a high percentage of CO₂, despite stating that “it may not be technically achievable or feasible in the early operational phase of the project.”

According to EPA data, Ascension Parish already is one of the most polluted parishes in the Country, and now Air Products wants to build a pollution emitting facility 100 feet from Sorrento Primary School. Air Products is attempting to say that this new facility will be “clean,” but the permit they are seeking shows that it is anything but that. Residents of Ascension Parish and Louisiana deserve better.
