But we really hope the Senate will send the Gulf some love this week.It looks like the RESTORE Act may be brought up as an amendment to the Transportation bill currently under consideration right now in the Senate. As you probably remember, the RESTORE Act seeks to direct 80% of BP’s Clean Water Act fines to Gulf coast ecosystem and economic restoration in the wake of BP’s drilling disaster. We think that makes sense. The federal government shouldn’t profit from the Gulf’s loss. BP’s fines could jumpstart the long-needed ecosystem restoration initiatives that we’ve supported for many years, and help us turn the tide on the Mississippi River Delta’s coastal wetlands crisis, while creating jobs and natural storm defenses to make our communities stronger and safer. This is an approach supported by everyone from the President’s Oil Spill Commission to 83% of voters polled nationwide. But we need the Senate to show us that they care too!Ask your Senators to put aside partisan games and pass the RESTORE Act!One last thought. It is going to take more than the Gulf to save the Gulf, so please share this action alert with your friends and family around the country (especially folks who love New Orleans, Mardi Gras, or the Gulf Coast).Aaron Viles is GRN’s Deputy Director.
