Learning from Disaster

In their latest Policy Journal, the Environmental Law Institute (www.eli.org) features a story called Learning from Disaster that poses the question, “Twenty-one years after the Exxon Valdez oil spill, will reactions to the Deepwater Horizon blowout finally address the systemic flaws revealed in Alaska?” The author, Zygmund Plater, is a law professor who served as chair of the State of Alaska Oil Spill Commission legal research task force responding to the Exxon-Valdez disaster. The article provides valuable insight into the similarities and differences between the two disasters, and points out long-standing needs for reform.GRN Executive Director, Cynthia Sarthou, also provides another view with her short commentary, An Opportunity for Change, that highlights lessons learned from her trip to Alaska and steps that must be taken in the Gulf. All together, definitely worth the read!Learning from Disaster by Zigmund Plater, with An Opportunity for Change by Cynthia Sarthou
