Pop the Popcorn, Home Screenings are Back

For the past 6 years, GRN has helped our best activists across the nation take their support off-line and host a movie screening in their home or community venue to educate family and friends about Louisiana’s coastal wetlands crisis and the ongoing impacts of BP’s historic oil drilling disaster. This October, Defend the Gulf Home Movie Screenings are back! With the Presidential race in its final heat, we’ll remind President Obama that, win or lose, there is still work he needs to get done in the Gulf. We’ve got the RESTORE Act under our belts and now we’ve got our eyes set on a Gulf of Mexico Regional Citizen’s Advisory Council (RCAC) to prevent future disasters and ensure that local communities have a role to play in oversight of the oil and gas industry. The fight to protect and restore the Gulf continues! I hope that you will join us in bringing the stories of the people and places of the Gulf to those in your family, friend circle, and community. Hosting is fun and easy, and we’ll be there with you every step of the way.Just choose a date that works for you in the first week or so of October (don’t worry, you can change it later if necessary) and sign up on our registration page.Once you’ve solidified your location and date, you can start inviting your friends. We’ll have sample language and instructions for emailing your friends, setting up a Facebook event, and other good ways to recruit. (Of course, the good old-fashioned phone call is always the best!)A couple weeks before the event, we will send you a host packet, which will include:detailed host instructions for the day of your event, the Defend the Gulf Short Film Showcase DVD,several fact sheets and post cards with information about the ongoing impacts of BP’s oil disaster and how we can work to protect andrestore the Gulf,a sample Action Letter to be handwritten and sent to the President,a water bottle embossed with GRN’s new logo to raffle off,a Basin St Records sampler with great tunes from Kermit Ruffins and more,a sample of New Orleans own Community Coffee, and more!As the dates get closer, we’ll host conference calls to update you on the latest BP oil disaster news, how the campaign is going, and give you instrcutions and tips for your events. And of course, we’ll always be here to answer questions and provide support. You can email ayn@healthygulf.org at anytime or call me at 504-525-1528 ext 217.Last year, we helped hosts organize two hundred house parties that were both informative and a lot of fun, and they had a huge impact on getting the RESTORE Act passed through Congress to bring billions of dollars to Gulf recovery.Wherever you live, the Gulf needs your support. Please host an event to help build the national call to protect and restore the Gulf.Ayn Pivonka is GRN’s Campaign Assistant
