18 organizations receive support to fight against petrochemical facilities in Texas, Louisiana
Healthy Gulf is pleased to announce the grantees for the 2023 Resisting Dirty Energy Campaign grant cycle. Eighteen deserving organizations and community projects were selected to receive a total of $335,000 from the campaign’s Community Advised Fund, with a focus on new and existing efforts led by frontline communities to block the expansion of more than 120 proposed petrochemical projects concentrated in Louisiana and Texas.
“Our grantees this year encompass a wide range of community organizations that are resisting the expansion of petrochemical facilities, using a variety of methods,” said Laura-Sage Marshall, Resisting Dirty Energy Campaign Coordinator at Healthy Gulf. Funded projects include canvassing, billboard campaigns, youth education, and more, with groups ranging from faith-based organizations to community groups. “We seek to boost groups that are helping their community in a way that comes from within, and puts the community’s needs and expertise first,” Marshall continued.
Since 2021, Healthy Gulf’s Resisting Dirty Energy Campaign expands movement support and provides technical assistance to build opposition to proposed new or expanded petrochemical infrastructure. The Resisting Dirty Energy Community Advised Fund provides individual grants of $10,000, $15,000, and $20,000 to frontline groups through the support of Beyond Petrochemicals.
“Every year, our grantees are on the ground in their communities, gaining support for our movement and contributing to a swell of people that are saying ‘no more’ to the industry that seeks to further exploit people and resources,” said Bette Billiot, one of the members of the Resisting Dirty Energy Campaign Advisory Committee that reviews grant applications. “This year is the largest number of groups we’ve been able to fund, and we’re looking forward to keeping up with their work.”
